Of the seven steps to finding peace and contentment in a troubled world, Step One: Turn off your autopilot. When you’re on autopilot, your mind is free to wander into the past or hurl forward into the future. Into the past, ruminating on “wouldda”, “couldda”, & “shouldda” will plunge you into depression; and if into the future, the “what if”s will rob of today’s joy and exacerbate anxiety mulling over scenarios which are likely to never occur.
To wake yourself up from autopilot, continue to do the “little things” you do each day but whether you are brushing your teeth or taking out the trash, fully attend to what you are doing. You don’t need to speed tasks up or down. You don’t even have to like what you’re doing. But, you do need to focus, that is stay in the moment and when you’re mind begins to wander, bring it back to the task at hand.
Mindfulness is the first step to managing your thoughts and emotions and finding peace and contentment in a troubled world.
